Why turn a JPEG into PNG at all
JPEG exists to make photographs small. It throws away color detail the eye is unlikely to notice, which is why a 12-megapixel holiday shot can travel as a two-megabyte email. That bargain fails the moment you treat the file as a graphic. Soft halos appear around logos, pale text on a white wall turns into muddy blocks, and every extra save makes it worse. PNG does the opposite: it stores every pixel you already have, then compresses with a lossless algorithm. The file gets bigger—often two to five times a typical JPEG—but it stops decaying.
People convert JPG to PNG for three practical jobs. First, they need a working file they can cut. JPEG has no alpha channel. If you want a person or a bottle isolated on a transparent layer, you must leave JPEG behind. Converting first gives you a lossless base; the actual knockout still happens in an editor, but you are no longer fighting new compression rings. Second, they are feeding a tool that only accepts PNG—slide templates, some print kiosks, sticker makers, or CMS blocks that assume a graphic, not a photo. Third, they plan a chain of crops and resizes. Starting from PNG means each step copies pixels instead of re-quantizing them.
What you gain and what you give up
You do not magically recover detail JPEG already deleted. A blocky sky stays blocky. What you gain is a ceiling: the PNG will not get worse. That matters for screenshots of dashboards, scanned documents saved as JPEG by a phone, and any image that contains hard edges or type. For a noisy night photo destined only for Instagram, PNG is usually a waste of disk. Keep JPEG, or better, convert to WebP if the destination is a website.
Transparency is the other fork. A straight JPG-to-PNG conversion produces an opaque PNG. The checkerboard you see in design apps will not appear until you erase or mask pixels. If your goal is a logo with a see-through background, this tool is the first hop, not the last. Pair it with crop or a dedicated editor. Do not expect GIF-style one-bit holes either; PNG alpha is 8-bit and much cleaner, which is why product sites prefer PNG or WebP over GIF for cutouts.
File size is the honest cost. A 4K JPEG at quality 85 might be 800 KB. The PNG can land between 3 and 12 MB depending on noise and resolution. That is fine for a local working file and painful as a hero image on a homepage. Use PNG for editing and overlays; export JPEG or WebP for delivery. For print shops that asked for TIFF, use JPG to TIFF instead—PNG is a screen format, TIFF is what many RIPs expect. And if the “JPG” is actually a screenshot of a UI, PNG is almost always the right long-term copy: the text stays sharp, and you can crop without introducing new mosquito noise around labels.
