## AVIF won on size; WebP still wins on reach AVIF files show up more often now: some Android cameras, Squoosh exports, and image CDNs default to it. Then a teammate on an older Safari, a Slack-adjacent preview, or a Java library in a backend fails to decode. WebP is the pragmatic downgrade. It is smaller than JPEG, supported in every current browser and many native apps, and easier to place in existing pipelines that already standardized on WebP last year. You are not gaining compression. A good AVIF is often smaller than the WebP you will create. You are buying compatibility. If the destination accepts JPEG only, WebP to JPG (after this step) or a direct flatten may be required.
